Characteristics of the ECI Transit System

Publicly operated transit services are available to all persons residing in the ECICOG region through the East Central Iowa Transit System. The regional system is brokered; comprised of six public transit providers operating within their respective boundaries: Benton County Transportation, Iowa County Transportation, Johnson County Seats, Jones County Jets, Linn County LIFTS and Washington County Mini Bus.

Five of the providers operate as county departments. The remaining is Washington County Mini Bus, and independent, non-profit organization.

The East Central Iowa Transit fleet includes 70 revenue vehicles and two service vehicles. Approximately 83% of these vehicles are lift or ramp equipped.

In fiscal year 2001, East Central Iowa Transit provided 270,201 passenger trips and 1,101,524 miles of revenue transit service at a cost of $2.1 million.

Elderly passengers account for approximately 27% of the annual rides provided. Passengers with disabilities account for 48% of the trips.

One hundred twenty two employees are involved in the provision of regional transit service. Administrative personnel account for 25 members of the staff. Seven individuals provide maintenance services, and 89 full and part time drivers are employed. In addition, ECICOG employs one full time transit administrator / planner and two additional full time transportation planning staff.
