A new state law adopted in 2025 requires all newly elected officials and those appointed to governmental bodies to complete a training on the responsibilities and requirements for open meetings and open records laws. This includes county supervisors, city council members, library boards, planning and zoning commissions, boards of adjustments, landfill commissions, entities created through 28E agreements and more. The training must be completed within 90 days of an official taking the oath of office or assuming the duties of their office.

You can register here for the four in-person open meeting sessions planned for our rural counties:

January 29th 6-7:30pm. Lawrence Center-Rotary Room; 600 E Main Street Anamosa (Rotary Room)

February 5th 6-7:30pm. Benton County Service Center; 811 D Avenue Vinton. (County Supervisor’s room)

February 12th 6-7:30pm. Marengo Public Library; 235 E Hilton Street Marengo (East Room)

February 19th 6-7:30pm. Washington City Hall; 215 E Washington Street Washington. (Firefighter Training room)

A $25 per person charge will be invoiced to the individual or host organization for the training. Contact ECICOG Contracts Administrator Robyn Jacobson for additional information. Depending on demand, additional sessions may be added. Virtual training opportunities are also offered by the Iowa League of Cities and Iowa State University Extension.
