ECICOG's Model City Code Makes Legal Compliance Easier

Codification, the process of organizing adopted laws into a code of ordinances, is required by cities in Iowa at least every five years. The Iowa Association of Councils of Government (ICOG) and law firm Dorsey and Whitney, LLP work together to develop and maintain a model code that is available to ECICOG. Communities using the model code can more easily amend their city code to reflect changes in Iowa statutes or common law. ECICOG is assisting several communities in the region with the process of updating to the model code. ECICOG can also help update specific sections of code. For example, ECICOG has been working with the City of Walker on an update to the City's Zoning Ordinance.

If your city is due for codification, needs assistance drafting code amendments, or needs to update its zoning ordinance, contact ECICOG Community Development Specialist Tom Gruis.
