Children at thirteen libraries in our region learned about landfills and constructive deconstruction with the help of the ECICOG Summer Reading Program. This year’s program informed and entertained 164 participants who read Construction Site Mission: Demolition by Sherri Duskey Rinker and learned about building demolition. The program included a hands-on activity that challenged participants to work together while demolishing and sorting a building made of blocks. The primary message of the program was to show that certain materials from buildings can be reused or recycled so we can conserve resources and save space in the landfill.

The program is sponsored by the Benton County Landfill, Iowa County Landfill, Jones County Transfer Station, and Tama County Landfill. Libraries located within the sponsoring landfills’ service area participate in the program free of charge. ECICOG partners with Matthew 25 and Green Iowa AmeriCorps to provide the program.
