Mount Vernon Updates Zoning Code to Allow Accessory Dwellings

The City of Mount Vernon recently adopted a zoning amendment ordinance prepared by ECICOG that added accessory dwelling units (ADU) as a conditional use to the City's code. Working with the City's Planning and Zoning Commission (P & Z), ECICOG facilitated a community open house related to accessory dwelling units, drafted the amendment, and then fine-tuned it with P & Z review and input.

ADU's are separate and complete dwelling areas constructed within a parcel that already has a primary dwelling. Mount Vernon's amended ordinance will provide an additional housing option, which in some cases may be lower than the cost of a new independent housing unit. ADU's allow communities to add housing without the cost of additional infrastructure.

Contact ECICOG Planner Tom Gruis for more information on ADU's or how your community could work with ECICOG on updating zoning codes.
